Breast Implants Incisions Techniques

There are 4 different ways to make the required incision:

1. Under the Breast Crease (Inframammary)

The technique involves making an incision in the crease under the breast, and the surgeon has a more direct control over the position of the implant, allowing him/her to insert larger silicone implants, or gummy bear implants more accurately.

Approximately 70 to 80% of breast augmentations using implants are carried out using this method.

This type of incision has the least adverse effect on the mammary glands. The same incision site can be used in case of complications, or need for additional surgeries.

2. In the Armpit (Transaxillary)

In this technique of Breast Implant, an incision is made in the armpit and used to place the implant at the top or bottom of the pectoralis muscle. Some surgeons use an endoscope to help complete the breast implant placement.

Approximately 10% of breast augmentations using implants are carried out using this method.

The advantage of having a breast implant with a transaxillary incision is that there will be no scarring on the breast itself. A possible disadvantage of this procedure is that the placement of symmetrical implants is somewhat more difficult using this approach, and post-surgery correction of the condition may require making additional incisions in the breast.

3. Around the Nipple (Periareolar)

In this method of breast implant, an incision is made around the nipple-areolar complex. Owing to the fact that the incision is located near the mammary glands, women who have this procedure may experience more problems breastfeeding, and feeling in their nipple(s) after breast implant. This type of incision is preferable for women who have very small breasts, and no gap or crease under their breasts.

4. In the Navel (Transumbilical)

A more modern approach is to make an incision in the navel area. An endoscope or small fiber-optic camera is inserted under the breast through this incision. The implant is then inserted through this tunnel and filled with saline solution. This method can only be carried out with saline implants. Implants that are placed using this method are slightly more likely to be damaged. In this technique, there is no scarring whatsoever on the breast(s).
