FUE Hair Transplant Techniques

Depending on whether the hair removal is done manually using a hand-held motorized device or assisted by suction motors or robots and also the tools and equipment that are used by the plastic surgeon in the way of carrying out the removal of hair grafts and planting them, the various FUE techniques have been given certain trade names which are maturing day by day.

We will discuss a few of the FUE hair transplant techniques below.

Hand-Held Motorized with Suction Assisted FUE Hair Transplant

If we consider the hair removal process in the FUE method as two steps including

cutting a canal around the hair follicle and then removing the follicles that have become separated from the skin of the head;

in the classic FUE hair transplant, the second step is done manually using a pair of forceps by the medical team.

In this technique, however, a follicle suction machine transfers the follicles to a receiver flask as the canal is cut using the punch device.

Then, the follicles are transferred using suction from the receiver flask to the planting punch device held in the surgeon’s hand.

A French company called MEDICAMAT was the first company to supply this machine to the market which was named SAFER® / NeoGraft®.

The main advantage of this method is the high speed at which the hair follicles are removed and planted compared to the other FUE methods.

Also, a medical team consisting fewer physicians is required and the transfer time from the hair removal phase to the planting phase is reduced greatly. One of the disadvantages of this technique is that the hair follicles may become damaged during suction.

These methods are also known as Automatic FUE Transplant methods.

SmartGraft™, NeoGraft, and Atera FUE-100 are other examples of the available automatic hair transplant machines using the FUE method, including counting the hair follicles, storing them, and keeping them wet.

Hand-Held Motorized FUE Without Suction

This method is the most popular method for hair transplantation amongst cosmetic surgeons who are members of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) and the highest number of FUE hair transplants have been done using this technique.

The punch device used in this technique features a micro-motor which is controlled regarding its torque and power by the physician with the help of a pedal that is located under his / her feet.

This punch can be easily controlled by the physician in the right direction and angle. Just like the manual method, a canal is dug around the follicle and the medical team carefully removes the follicles with the help of a pair of forceps.

In FUE Hair Transplant, the surgeon becomes tired less, has more control over the punch device, and less damage is imposed on the follicles.

Manual FUE Hair Transplant

In FUE hair transplant, the plastic surgeon uses a punch in his / her hand that can also be rotated or oscillated to delve the canal around the hair follicles with the utmost care.

This is the very first tool used and the first known method for the FUE method. The manual FUE hair transplant is still used by some of the best surgeons at many specialized hair transplant clinics.

The reason for this preference among physicians is the complete control of the surgeon over the angle and direction of the punching device when removing the hair follicles and also the minimum amount of hair follicle contact with medical tools after it is removed.

Robotic Assisted FUE Hair Transplant

In FUE method, a robot will be the surgeon’s assistant during the canal cutting process around the hair follicles.

The only robotic device available in the market is the American ARTAS. This machine does NOT remove the hair follicles and just as the other methods, removing the follicles and categorizing them is done by the medical team.

This method is slower than the other methods yet it provides the surgeon with high precision and thus, less damage is done to the hair follicles.
