Comparison Between an Abdominal Liposuction and a Tummy Tuck Surgery

What is the difference between an Abdominal Liposuction and a Tummy Tuck SurgeryLiposuction?

These two procedures are different methods for changing the size and appearance of the abdomen.

Both treatments aim to shrink, flatten, and tighten the abdominal area. However, they differ in how the surgery itself is carried out, the length of the recovery period, and the potential risks and side effects. The decision as to which treatment is better for any individual patient should be made by a specialized physician, and according to the unique condition of the patient in question. Only then is it possible to obtain ideal results.

The Tummy Tuck treatment is commonly used for patients who do NOT have a large amount of stubborn adipose tissue in their abdomen, but have little muscle tension, or skin that is not elastic enough. Liposuction alone might NOT yield the expected results if the skin on the abdomen is loose, or if the abdominal wall is stretched as a result of significant weight loss or pregnancy.

Individuals who have a large amount of excess fat in their abdomen will have loose and sagging skin if liposuction alone is carried out. This being the case, a combined treatment including liposuction and Tummy Tuck can be performed on them. The advantage of doing so is that less skin will have to be lifted during the procedure.

A Tummy Tuck treatment removes extra skin in addition to getting rid of excess adipose tissue. This helps strengthen the abdominal muscles. During this surgery, which is usually performed under general anesthesia, incisions are made in the lower abdomen area. The surgeon then stitches the stretched muscles together to bring them closer. The skin is then pulled firmly onto the abdomen, the excess amount is removed, and the site is closed using sutures. The entire process takes 2 to 3 hours to complete.

A Tummy Tuck surgery includes more potential risks and has a longer recovery period when compared with a liposuction surgery. Also, fluid discharge from the wounds will continue for up to 2 weeks after surgery. The first phase of recovery after undergoing an abdominoplasty treatment takes approximately 6 weeks, and the final results will be achieved after 6 to 10 months.

The Cosmetic Surgeries that May Be Combined with Abdominal Liposuction Surgery Include:

  • Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
  • Liposuction in other areas of the body, such as the breasts
  • Lift in other areas of the body such as the breasts, arms, and thighs
  • Fat injection (fat transplant/grafting)
